Spirit of Suffolk offers a variety of wildlife and cultural tours as well as photography workshops, short books and photo prints. It is independently owned and operated by Philip Charles who looks to build and support a conservation-based economy that works to enhance the intrinsic value of the Suffolk countryside in a sustainable manner whilst educating and promoting good ethical practices in wildlife viewing and photography.
I look to work with the local community, particularly through youth engagement for they are the future stewards and decision makers of this landscape. I seek to connect with, educate and inspire those around Suffolk and beyond through print and social media platforms. Using such platforms provides an opportunity to give a voice to the great British countryside that we hold so close to our hearts. I envision a shift in perspectives on how people see and use our living-landscapes whilst actively promoting conservation issues and initiatives.
Growing up in Suffolk, Philip’s life-long passion for wildlife and the natural world led him to studying a diploma in Animal Management and a degree Animal Conservation Science. Following this an opportunity to undertake research on bears in coastal British Columbia was offered and he spent most of his 20’s in western Canada.
He was hired by the world renowned Spirit Bear Lodge and worked as a lead guide for them for 6 years. During this time he certified as a guide with the CBVA and assisted in the training of many of his fellow guides. It is during his time in Canada that Philip further developed his skill with a camera, always learning from the people he encountered there including work with National Geographic, the Nature Conservancy, the BBC and the Smithsonian.
Now settled in his native United Kingdom Philip founded Spirit of Suffolk in 2018. His passion for education also sees him work as a lecturer at Suffolk New College.
